On August 26, 2012, Irish singer Sinead O’Connor shared a post on her official website speaking about her Marlay Park gig. O’Connor had played three songs with “The Don Baker Band,” and performed blues classics such as “Hoochie Coochie Man.” The performance was met with praise from fans, concert attendees, and critics such as Ken Sweeney of the Irish Independent. Following the performance, however, O’Connor wanted to clear up previous misconceptions regarding her participation in the event and wanted to clarify just how important the audience is to her.
“The audience are [sic] the most important people in showbusines [sic]. They shouldn't be misled. Ever,” O’Connor stated in response to misconceptions that she was one of the headlining acts. O’Connor reiterated that she participated in the Marlay Park gig as part of the Don Baker Band and was upset that some fans thought she was a headliner. Previous media reports had mistakenly referred to O’Connor as performing with Van Morrison or Tom Jones. Other reports had questioned whether some concertgoers would need a refund if O’Connor backed out of the performance. O’Connor expressed several times that she played the gig for free and enjoyed herself “immensely.”
“It was always the plan that I would guest for Don as a friend, for fun and for no fee.
“Therefore there was no contract.
“It was always understood by M.C.D that I would be singing 3 songs, for free,” O’Connor stated in her opening address.
O’Connor has recorded nine studio albums and will appear on the Damien Dempsey album Almighty Love, due for release in September 2012.
Speaking of music and the integrity expected of artists and those in the recording industry O’Connor stated on her site, “Music means a lot to people. More than you or I could begin to imagine.
“It aint all about money.
“It’s about truth.
“It’s either in the air or it aint and an audience can smell if it aint.”
