Video: Sinead O'Connor talks bi-polar diagnosis, takes part in World Suicide Prevention Day

On September 10, 2012, Sinead O'Connor will take part in World Suicide Prevention Day, by speaking via Skype. The event will be held in Ireland, and is sponsored by Grassroots Training. September 10 is the annual day of awareness and remembrance for those suffering from mental illness, depression, and those who have committed or attempted suicide.

World Suicide Prevention Day is a global event that seeks to remove the stigma associated with those dealing with depression and mental illness. The World Health Organization, The International Association for Suicide Prevention and The World Federation for Mental Health work in conjunction to sponsor World Suicide Prevention Day.  It is believed that the stigma and social non-acceptance, and even bullying has contributed to higher suicide rates world wide.

Participating with Sinead O'Connor is Kate Bornstein. Bornstein was born a boy and now lives as a woman. She is the author of several books including Hello Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks and Other Outlaws and A Queer and Pleasant Danger. She is a powerful voice to young LGBT teens dealing with fear, depression, and thoughts of suicide. Bornstein has participated in the "It Gets Better Project" that was launched after more than five teen and children suicides occurred in the United States during September 2010.

The rash of teen suicides occured in children and teens that were LGBT, bullied for being LGBT, or accused of being LGBT. The suicides brought great media attention to the trials and torments that often plague those who are LGBT, and culminated with the suicide of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi. Though Kate Bornstein and Sinead O'Connor will participate in the Grassroots Training event in Ireland, there will be other events taking place worldwide.

Additionally, those who would like to remember those who have lost their lives to suicide are asked to light a candle in their windows at 8 pm.
